Google had bought and acquired VirusTotal, an online virus-scanning service. VirusTotal is a free service that provides computer virus and malicious software detection in files and websites. VirusTotal is based in Spain and has only a handful of employees, that performs the free virus detection service by pooling data from scores of various antivirus engines, file and URL analysis tools, and website scanners.

Users just need to head on the Virustotal site and access the online tool by either submitting a website of selecting a file from their desktops. The  online tool will take care of the rest and will show various detection statistics. Maximum file size that VirusTotal supports is currently 32MB.

With the merging of VirusTotal and Google, it seems that the online virus-scanning service site will increase the quality and power of their malware research tools, making it faster and better, as Google’s infrastructures will ensure the VirusTotal tools are always ready when you need them.

In a recent post and update by VirusTotal, they said that their goal is simple: to help people keep safe on the web, and they are delighted that Google, a longtime partner, has acquired them.

VirusTotal was launched on June 2004, and was selected by PCWorld Magazine as one of the best 100 products of 2007. It currently uses up to 44 different antivirus products and scan engines to check for viruses that the user’s own antivirus solution installed on their machine may have missed, or to verify false positives. The online tool can also be used to scan suspect URLs and search through the VirusTotal dataset in case it’s been flagged as a malicious site.

VirusTotal will be continuing to operate independently, keeping and maintaining their partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. Together with Google, they are looking forward in fighting virus and malwares.
