How to Back Up and Restore on iOS device
In backing up your iPhone, iPad, or iPad Touch you can use iCloud and iTunes. These backed up information and data includes purchased music, app, TV shows, books, photos, video, device settings, app data, home screen, app organization, ringtones, and more.
Note that backup of purchased music is not available in all countries, and backup of purchased TV shows occurs only in the United States. Previous purchases that you have made may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or the iBookstore.
How to back up using iCloud
iCloud lets you automatically back up most important data on your iOS 5 device. To enable backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, just go the Settings > iCloud > Backup & Storage. Backup will be running on a daily basis as long as your iOS device meets the requirements below:
- Connected to a power source
- Connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi
- Screen locked
Manual Backup is also available whenever your device is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Just choose Back Up Now from Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
How to Restore from a Backup using iCloud
Choose “Restore from iCloud Backup” when you go through the Setup Assistant on a new iOS 5 device. Enter you iCloud account and password as prompted. From there you should be able to see three most recent backups for each of the devices you enabled Backup. You can then choose which backup to restore.
You device will restart after finishing the backup, restoring your settings, purchased music, TV shows, books, apps, Camera Roll, and other content. You may also be prompted to enter passwords for all the accounts enable on your device.
Regarding apps restoration, a progress bar will appear below the apps that are being downloaded. If you want to prioritize the restore of a specific app, then you can tap its icon. Restore will be attempting to download the same version of the app that was installed previously. If the app version is no longer available, then the latest version of the app will be restored.
If you want to check if the restore is complete just go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Complete the setup assistant after you have erase your device. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings or after starting your new device.
If you are prompted to set up a new or to restore from previous backup, just choose to restore from iCloud backup and then enter your Apple ID and password.
How to backup using iTunes
iTunes can create a backup of your iOS device if it meets the criteria below:
- Sync with iTunes (disabled if you currently have iCloud backup turned on)
- Right-click or Control-click the iOS device in iTunes, under Devices just choose Back Up
How to manually backup your iOS device using iTunes
- Connect your iOS device to a computer with iTunes installed (latest version)
- Select your iOS device in iTunes, under Devices
- Right-click or Control-click the device in the iTunes and select Back Up
- iOS device backups done on iTunes preserve your settings, Camera Roll (pictures), and other important data.
How to Restore from a Backup using iTunes
To restore from a backup using iTunes, just use one of the following methods below after connecting your iOS device to the computer which you typically sync:
Right-click or Control-click the device and choose the Restore from Backup.
If your iOS device is new, then you can connect it to iTunes, and iTunes will automatically prompt to restore from your backup.
