TOP500 List of Supercomputers Released! K Computer Tops the List.

Linux dominated the list, as for November 2011, Linux hosts steady at 457 of the 500. An astounding – 91.4% of the top 500 supercomputers in the world are Linux-based. 91.4% are running on LINUX (457 of the 500)

The TOP500 List is released each June and November and compiled by representatives from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, University of Mannheim in Germany and the NERSC/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Back in June, when the 37th TOP500 List was released, the top spot for super computers was given to Japan’s new K Computer, even though K Computer was only partially built. K Computer is the first supercomputer to achieve 10 quadrillion calculations per second (10 Petaflops/s). Although it has the highest power consumption, it is still one of the most energy efficient systems on the list.

The K computer – named for the Japanese word “kei”, which stands for 10 quadrillion[1] – is a supercomputer being produced by Fujitsu at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science campus in Kobe, Japan.
In June 2011, the TOP500 ranked K the world’s fastest supercomputer, with a rating of over 8 petaflops, and in November 2011, K became the first computer to top 10 petaflops. It is expected to become fully operational in November 2012.

All of the Top 10 supercomputers on the newest list retained their spots they had back in June. The TOP500 editor Erich Strohmaier said that this is the first time in the TOP500 list’s history, which dates back to 1993, that the top 10 systems showed no change in rankings.

Unix has picked up a few of the systems, though. This time around 30 of the top 500 in the list are UNIX-based, and 11 are of “mixed” operating systems. Windows, however, took a major hit. In the June list, Windows had only 4 systems on it. And this time in the November, Microsoft Windows is clings to the TOP500 with one system.
